With a new biking season just around the corner, we decided to share some tips to help you get ready. Here’s a laid-back guide to make the most of your time on two wheels.
1. Pick the Right Bike
Your bike should match the ride you’ve got in mind. Cruising around the city? A road or hybrid bike will do the trick. Hitting trails? A mountain bike is your best friend. Make sure your bike fits you well and feels comfy for longer rides.
2. Do a Quick Bike Check
A simple check before you ride can save you from surprises:
- Tires: Are they pumped up and in good shape?
- Brakes: Test them to make sure they’re stopping smoothly.
- Chain: A little lube goes a long way—keep it quiet and smooth.
- Gears: Shift through them to be sure everything’s working right.
If something seems off, swing by your local bike shop.
3. Dress for the Ride
Wear something breathable and comfortable. A helmet is non-negotiable, and padded shorts can make longer rides way easier on your body. Sunglasses and gloves are great extras, and if it’s chilly, layer up with wind-resistant clothes.
4. Don’t Forget the Essentials
Even for short rides, toss these into your bag or pockets:
- Water (a bottle or hydration pack)
- Snack or energy bar
- Mini pump
- Spare tube and patch kit
- Multi-tool (for quick fixes)
- Phone with a GPS or cycling app
- Some ID and a bit of cash or a card
5. Know Your Route
Take a few minutes to check your route. Use cycling maps or apps so you don’t end up guessing turns. For group rides like Mississauga’s Community Rides, look at the distance and terrain to see if it’s a good match for you.
6. Fuel Up and Stretch (Loosen Up)
Grab a light bite an hour or two before you ride, and drink plenty of water. A few stretches before and after will help keep your muscles happy.
7. Be a Smart Rider
Stick to the rules of the road, be alert, and let others know what you’re doing with hand signals. In group rides, give others space and ride predictably.
Prepping doesn’t have to be complicated. A little planning makes your ride smoother and way more fun. Whether you’re riding solo or with a crew, being ready helps you focus on what matters most—enjoying the ride.
Stay safe, have fun, and see you out there!
